Gmundner Keramik HISTORY

Hand-painted Gift
and Dinner Ware from Austria
Let Gmundner Keramik put balance in your life...
The line of hand painted ceramic objects known the world over as GMUNDNER KERAMIK originates in the town of Gmunden on the shores of the Traunsee, one of the most picturesque sites in the alpine lake country of Austria.
History
The culture of the region has deep, Celtic
roots which may account for the artistic inclination prevalent among its native
population. For more than three hundred years, artisans of Gmunden have fashioned
tableware and other household objects from the alluvial clay deposits found there, and have decorated them in colors and patterns
that have become classics of the genre. During the last century, the individual artisans
of Gmunden turned to more organized forms of manufacturing to produce the regions
distinctive ceramic ware.

The oldest and best known of the Gmundner patterns is the Gruengeflammt (Green Stripe); in fact, over the centuries, Green has become the defining color of Gmundner Keramik.
As times and tastes changed, new colors and patterns were added: Streublumen (Straw Flowers), Blau- and Gelbgeflammt(Blue and Yellow Stripe) and the latest, combining all three Stripes, the décor Buntegeflammt (Rainbow), all of which are equally popular today. The Grüner Hirsch (Deer ) pattern, inspired by Salzburgs renowned Hotel Goldener Hirsch has been a favorite among many American tourists to Austria.
The décor Jagd (Hunt) features bucolic hunting scenes
rendered in the local style. This beautiful pattern was chosen to be used on stage in the
1998 Broadway revival of the musical Sound of Music to maintain the
authenticity of the plays Austrian heritage.
We are committed to making these goods available to everyone who shares an appreciation for Austrian
